If You Can't Let Something Go, Let it in. Yes, IN!

Have you ever noticed that holding on is the effort, whereas letting go is the opposite of actually doing anything? Letting go is like dropping a piece of food for the dog, coins in a tip jar, or seeds in a furrow. Even if it takes a few attempts, we can tell whether or not we’re getting rid of a feeling that keeps us stressed. (This is about everyday feelings, not clinical diagnoses.)

If that’s not working, then consider just being OK with it. To let it in relaxes the emotional charge we have on it because then we’re not working so hard to push it away. That pushing is like not thinking of a pink elephant – it’s the resistance that keeps it right there pushing back at us. And keeps us stuck in repetitive, negative, thought loops.

If you can’t be OK with the feeling you don’t want, can you at least be OK with the resistance that you have to it? This is also a valuable step in gaining some relaxation from the struggle. Just for now; just for a while. Then notice how it frees you up to think and feel more positive things.

Relaxation from being OK with the not-wanting something until we can regain our balance and clarity affords us a few advantages. It calms us down by taking the pressure off, reducing the heat. From there, we may notice aspects we can maybe let go of piece by piece, instead of trying be rid of all at once. The negative feeling may even slip to a back-burner so we carry it with less stress, work around it more easily. Or it may even simply dissipate on its own because we’ve loosened our hold, our attachment, our grip on it – we’re no longer feeding it with our effort and attention.

This is also true with a habit. If you aren’t stopping like you’d hoped, then at least don’t beat yourself up about it, which takes a toll on your immune system because that’s what negative emotions do. Accepting where you are with it will likely bring you to a more relaxed state, which is where you need to be to begin to let it go later, again, when you’re ready.
